New Sites – What To Do!

A few ideas to keep in mind when you are building a website.

First impressions count for a whole lot in the online world.

In real life, we’re given the opportunity to get to know people before reaching a conclusion. This concept doesn’t translate to the fast-paced world of the Internet.

Everyday, countless websites are judged within a matter of minutes on their content and layout.
… If you have a great layout but lousy content, you fail. And
… if you have great content but an atrocious layout, you also fail.

The first principle to master in regard to correct website layout is called the KISS principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Since online customers have a very short attention span, it’s mandatory you keep everything simple, including navigational links, scripts, and especially media. Any video or image you place on your site should be compressed beforehand into a format suitable to the net, such as JPEG or MPEG-1.

If you’re operating a text-intensive website, it’s important you use readable fonts and font sizes.

Stick to professional fonts (Arial, Helvetica, Verdana) and a size between 11 to12 pixels. Whatever you do, don’t use a fancy font such as Comic Sans.

What colour combinations would be best? A badly chosen set of colours could potentially make it difficult for viewers to read your content.

You may want to consider hiring a professional to help you with all these decisions which should be made before you start.

However, as the old saying goes “You get what you pay for” so maybe if you want a professional website that will work for your business, maybe you should talk to a professional about building a site for you.
