Questions You Always Wanted to Ask!

WHAT IS EMAIL:

Electronic mail, often abbreviated as email, e.mail or e-mail, is a method of exchanging digital messages which are sent from one internet user to another. E-mail sends your correspondence instantaneously anywhere in the world.

The message is addressed to “something” @ “something” –
eg. fred@bigpond.net.au or
doit@nqwebdesign.com

HOW DO I GET MY EMAIL?

Your email will be sent to your website (or provider), and will sit there until you collect it (like mail going to the PO Box).

You have to collect the mail so you go to the PO Box (or the website/provider in this case) and have your computer logon to the website and download (collect) the mail.

WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME?

You register your domain name i.e. www.fredblogs.com.au through a registry who lists these names. A domain name must be unique. Domain names are hierarchical. Domain’s suffix indicates which TLD (top level domain) it belongs to, for example .com; .com.au; .org; .net etc.

Internet users access your website using your domain name.

WHAT IS THE INTERNET?

The Internet, sometimes called simply “the Net,”

It is a worldwide system of computer networks – a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers.

WHAT IS HOSTING – WEBSITE HOSTING?

When you have a website you need to have the site hosted (or sitting) on a server to allow the world to be able to see that site. (like parking your car in a large garage)

The governing body of your domain name then directs enquiries to this host – thus people will be able to find your website when they type in your domain name.

WHAT IS A SEARCH ENGINE?

A search engine finds and organises the answers you need so you can make faster, more informed decisions.

Search engines create web site listings by using spiders that “crawl” web pages, index their information, and optimally follows that site’s links to other pages.

Spiders return to already-crawled sites on a pretty regular basis in order to check for updates or changes, and everything that these spiders find goes into the search engine database.

HOW DO I SEARCH FOR SOMETHING ON THE INTERNET?

Most information is found on the Internet by utilizing a search engine (ie google.com.au). A search engine is a web service that uses web robots to query millions of pages on the Internet and creates an index of those web pages. Users can then use these services to quickly and easily find the information they may be looking for.

If you want to find accommodation or a service in a particular area – type in “webdesign townsville” or that town or goods you are looking for. Other queries can be found by even asking a question in the search box.

We hope this helps to understand the internet – however should you have any questions please contact us at NQ Web Design
